Assessment for Persons With Profound or Severe Impairments (APPSI-2)

A compassionate tool designed to assess and understand the communication strengths, abilities, and challenges of young children.

Testing Time: 15 to 60 minutes

The APPSI-2 is an easy-to-administer test built specifically for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and clinicians working with clients of any age who are preverbal and functioning at a mental age of 0 to 24 months. The test’s second edition has been fully reconceptualized to create an assessment system that is comprehensive enough to aid in planning effective individualized instruction.

Implementing Test Results

The APPSI-2 test results can be used to:

• Identify abilities and behaviours that children are able to demonstrate
• Plan effective intervention, and
• Monitor progress in mastery of new abilities

The APPSI-2 also aids in defining an individual child's preferred methods of communication, which is useful for planning instruction to enhance their independence.

APPSI-2 Domains

This impairment assessment covers foundational learning components as well as major developmental components. The five APPSI-2 domains include:

1. Alertness
2. Preferences
3. Problem-Solving Prerequisites
4. Communication
5. Social-Emotional

Specifically, the APPSI-2 measures children's alertness, the types of stimuli likely to evoke his or her attention, and the rewards likely to serve as reinforcers. All of these components are foundational to instructional planning, especially at a young age.

The APPSI-2 also measures children’s problem-solving skills, their ability to communicate with others, and their social-emotional abilities. These traits are integral to a child's successful development and enhance their quality of life.

Administration

Depending on the type and amount of information needed for instructional planning, Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) and clinicians can administer the entire APPSI-2 test, a combination of several domains, or a single domain at any given time.
