When students can describe an object by its category, function, and features, they are strengthening the semantic networks that support word finding, comprehension, and expressive language. These companion cards make that practice a game.
Build describing skills and semantic networks through semantic feature analysis in a cooperative game format.
This companion set expands the Balancing Language Burger with a 50-card prompt deck built on semantic feature analysis. Each card carries the same six attribute prompts, giving students a consistent routine for describing common objects as they build the burger together.
Six attribute prompts on every card:
- Category
- Function
- Appearance
- Materials
- Parts
- Location
How to play:
- Pair the cards with the Balancing Language Burger game.
- A player rolls the die.
- The die shows a burger topping, so the player takes the matching card.
- The player answers the prompt on the matching card.
- After a correct response, the player adds that topping to the wobbly plate.
- Play continues cooperatively until the group builds one complete burger without it toppling.
Who are these companion cards helpful for?
These describing companion cards are designed for all ages and grades, from emerging learners through older students who benefit from structured describing practice. They are ideal for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), special educators, and classroom teachers, and they suit students working on word finding, vocabulary depth, and expressive language. These companion cards suit individual therapy, small group intervention, classroom-based language programming, and home practice with families.
Why Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) love these companion cards:
The consistent six-prompt routine is based on semantic feature analysis, a well-supported approach for building the connections that speed word retrieval. Because the structure repeats on every card, students organize their descriptions with less prompting while still meeting a wide range of vocabulary.
Describing Attributes: Balancing Burger Companion Cards includes:
- 50-card prompt deck
- 6 consistent attribute prompts per card (category, function, appearance, materials, parts, location)
Please note: This is a companion card set for the Balancing Language Burger. The game is not included, but can be purchased separately here.
