HearBuilder® Story Retell Test (H-SRT) is a norm-referenced standardized assessment evaluating listening comprehension and story retell ability, designed for administration by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) with children ages 4 years 6 months through 9 years 11 months.
A norm-referenced story retell assessment with three levelled story books and standardised scoring gives Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) objective, age-referenced data on a student's ability to listen to, retain, and reconstruct a story.
The HearBuilder® Story Retell Test (H-SRT) consists of the Story Retell subtest of the Emerging Literacy and Language Assessment (ELLA). To administer, the clinician reads the student a story while showing the pictures in a storybook. A trial item story is provided for familiarisation. Three standardised story levels follow: Level 1 (A Day at the Beach, ages 4;6-5;5), Level 2 (Ice Cream Surprise, ages 5;6-6;11), and Level 3 (Making the Team, ages 7;0-9;11). The H-SRT yields standard scores, percentile ranks, confidence intervals, and age equivalents. Testing time is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Developed by Elisabeth Wiig, Ph.D., CCC-SLP and Wayne Secord, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. Published 2012.
Who is this story retell assessment helpful for?
HearBuilder® Story Retell Test is designed to assess listening comprehension and story retell ability in children ages 4 years 6 months through 9 years 11 months. Administered by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) as part of a comprehensive language or literacy evaluation, or as a pre/post-measure for students receiving narrative intervention.
Why Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) love this assessment:
Story retell is a strong indicator of both listening comprehension and oral language ability, and having a norm-referenced measure with standard scores allows SLPs to document eligibility and monitor progress in an area that many comprehensive language batteries do not assess in depth. The three age-levelled story books allow administration across a wide age range without ceiling effects, and the H-SRT meets Early Reading First and Reading First requirements. Replacement record forms (HSRT22) are available separately. Developed by Elisabeth Wiig, Ph.D., CCC-SLP and Wayne Secord, Ph.D., CCC-SLP.
