SnapWords® Spelling Dictionary reinforces word recognition, spelling, and reading fluency.

SnapWords® Spelling Dictionary compiles images, body motions, and sentences from the original SnapWords® cards, organizing them alphabetically for easy reference. The Spelling Dictionary is designed to be used as a review tool for students already familiar with SnapWords®. The dictionary is an excellent support resource for writing centers, special education, ELL learners, and lesson preparation.

How It Works

Step 1: Introduce the Word

  • Find the word in the SnapWords® Spelling Dictionary and say it aloud.
  • Discuss the picture representation, giving students time to study and connect the image to the word.
  • Perform the hand motion while saying the word together.
  • Read the example sentence, encouraging students to repeat it.

Step 2: Review & Reinforce

  • Ask students to identify words in the dictionary. If they hesitate, provide the word rather than letting them guess incorrectly.
  • Repeat the body motion and read the sentence together.

Step 3: Transition to Word Recognition

  • Write each word on small cards and spread them out.
  • Show students a picture word and have them find the corresponding plain word card.

Step 4: Independent Review

  • Once students can quickly match plain words to picture words, set the dictionary aside and use word cards for review.
  • If students struggle, revisit the dictionary and review the image and motion for reinforcement.
  • Take turns calling out words and challenging students to locate them.
  • Once students master a set of words, store them in a baggie or box and begin practicing a new group of 10-12 words, following the same steps.
