The Stuttering Severity Instrument Fifth Edition (SSI-5) is the newest edition of a long-trusted, norm-referenced measure of stuttering severity, used with children and adults from early childhood through later adulthood.

An all-new, norm-referenced stuttering assessment with fresh norms and included online scoring gives Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) an efficient, defensible way to measure and monitor stuttering severity across the lifespan.

The SSI-5 measures stuttering severity by looking at how often stuttering occurs during speaking and oral reading tasks, how long stuttering-related disfluencies last, and the behaviours that accompany stuttering. Frequency, duration, and associated behaviour scores are each converted to scaled scores and summed into two severity scores: one calculated without oral reading, for examinees of all ages, and one with oral reading, for examinees 8 years and older. The test reports percentile ranks and severity levels, and its norms are based on an all-new sample of 233 individuals. A typical administration takes 20 to 30 minutes and is completed individually.

Who is this stuttering assessment helpful for?

The SSI-5 supports Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who assess, diagnose, and monitor stuttering in clinical and research settings. Its norms span ages 2 years 9 months through 73 years 11 months, so a single instrument can follow a client from preschool through adulthood.

Why Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) use this assessment:

The SSI-5 balances a quick, structured administration with the rigour of updated norms, which makes it practical for a busy caseload while remaining sound for diagnostic and research use. The included online scoring system enters session results, administers the self and parent rating scales, converts raw scores into percentile ranks and severity levels, and produces a summary report, which removes manual look-up tables and reduces scoring errors. Developed by Kenneth J. Logan, Ronald B. Gillam, and Glyndon D. Riley.
