The Grammar Processing Program is a two-level picture-identification task program targeting grammar comprehension and processing, designed for use by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) with students in grades prekindergarten and up and children ages 3 to 11 who have difficulty processing or learning grammatical structures.
Two levels of structured picture-identification tasks using Language Webs and the Altered Auditory Input technique give Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) a systematic, evidence-informed program for teaching seven grammatical areas to children who have difficulty processing language, including those with ADD/ADHD, auditory processing disorders, autism, and cochlear implants.
The Grammar Processing Program uses the same Altered Auditory Input (AAI) technique and Language Web framework from The Processing Program (TPX37701/37702). Level 1 pre-teaches seven grammatical areas at the single concept level: nouns (singular, plural, possessive), pronouns (subjective, possessive), verbs (present progressive, third person singular/plural, regular and irregular past tense, future tense), adjectives (size, colour, quantity, quality), negative "not", prepositions, and conjunctions. Level 2 combines these concepts into longer, more complex sentence structures for concept drilling. The picture-identification task format removes the expressive language demand from the comprehension task, making the programme accessible to children who cannot yet produce the target grammatical structures verbally. Who is this grammar programme helpful for?
The Grammar Processing Program is designed for children with difficulty processing or learning grammatical skills, including those with attention deficit disorders, auditory processing disorders, autism, and cochlear implants, in grades prekindergarten and up and children ages 3 to 11. Used exclusively by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in individual or small group intervention sessions.
Why Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) love this programme:
The picture-identification task format is a critical feature for students who have difficulty producing language: by requiring students to identify rather than produce, the programme separates comprehension from production and allows SLPs to establish grammatical understanding before targeting expression. The AAI technique provides a systematic way to adjust the auditory complexity of each instruction for each child's specific processing profile, making the programme adaptable across a wide range of severity levels. By Sandra McKinnis, M.A., CCC-SLP.
The Grammar Processing Program includes:
- Two-level reproducible programme manual — Level 1 (pre-teaching individual grammatical concepts) and Level 2 (combining concepts into complex sentences)
- Language Webs and Altered Auditory Input (AAI) technique instruction
- Seven grammatical areas: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, negation, prepositions, and conjunctions
