Webber Story Builder is an interactive classroom-sized pocket chart program targeting story comprehension, story retell, listening for details, and narrative summarising, designed for use by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and teachers with students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 8 and children and youth ages 3 to 14.

A 12" x 48" colour-coded vinyl pocket chart with 22 story builder symbols and scripted lessons gives Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and teachers a concrete, visual framework for teaching students to identify story elements, remember narrative details, and retell stories in their own words.

Webber Story Builder uses a colour-coded 12" x 48" vinyl pocket chart with 10 pockets to create a step-by-step visual scaffold for story retell. While telling or reading a story, the clinician or student places the appropriate Story Builder symbol into the corresponding pocket on the chart. The first pocket is green and represents the beginning of the story; the last is red and represents the closing event. Each pocket in between corresponds to a story element: characters, setting, story starter, events 1 through 4, and solution. The symbols are labelled on the back for teacher reference. The programme includes scripted lessons and practice stories that walk clinicians and teachers through the story-building process from the first session. Write-on/wipe-off cards and wet-erase markers allow for personalized story elements to be recorded directly on the chart. Developed by Audrey Prince, Clint Johnson, and Thomas Webber.

Who is this story builder program helpful for?

Webber Story Builder is designed to target story comprehension, narrative structure, story grammar, listening for details, and retelling and summarising skills in students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 8 and children and youth ages 3 to 14. Ideal for use by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and teachers in individual therapy sessions, small group narrative instruction, or classroom story time and language arts activities.

Why Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and teachers love this program:

The physical, hands-on nature of placing symbols on the chart during a story gives students an active role in the comprehension process, which supports attention and recall significantly better than passive listening alone. The colour-coded structure provides a consistent visual language for story elements that students can internalize and begin applying independently across new stories, and the scripted lessons remove the planning burden for clinicians who are new to visual narrative instruction. Developed by Audrey Prince, Clint Johnson, and Thomas Webber.
