Deciding which item does not belong, and explaining why, pulls together categorisation, comparison, and reasoning in one deceptively simple task. These photo cards make that task motivating with the double dice format.

Build categorisation and reasoning through photo-based practice that asks students to compare, classify, and explain.

The Which One Doesn’t Belong? Why? Double Dice Add-On Deck asks students to analyze four presented items, decide which one does not fit, and explain why. Each 3 x 5 inch card features a photograph along with four separate lists of items or ideas that relate to the picture. With 54 cards and 216 prompts, students get repeated practice in categorization, comparison, and verbal reasoning.

Skill targets:

  • Categorization: grouping items by shared characteristics
  • Classification: identifying how items fit into a category
  • Reasoning: explaining why an item does or does not belong
  • Comparing and contrasting, and answering why questions

How to play:

  1. Place nine cards face down on the table.
  2. The student rolls the double dice.
  3. The outer die reveals a shape, so flip over the card with the matching shape.
  4. The inner die reveals a number, so read the corresponding prompt.
  5. The student responds, then play moves to the next student.

Who are these photo cards helpful for?

The Which One Doesn’t Belong? Why? Double Dice Add-On Deck is ideal for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), special educators, and classroom teachers. Particularly valuable for kindergarten through grade 6 as students build categorization and reasoning. These photo cards support individual therapy, small group intervention, classroom-based language programming, and home practice with families.

Why Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) love this deck:

These photo cards package categorization, comparison, and why-question practice into one motivating task, so a single card gives you several ways to work a student’s reasoning. The four lists per card let you scale difficulty and keep sessions varied. The double dice (sold separately) keep students engaged across the 216 prompts.

Which One Doesn’t Belong? Why? Double Dice Add-On Deck includes:

  • 54 large-format playing cards (3 x 5 inches) with photos and four which-does-not-belong prompts per card (216 total)
  • Answer cards, direction card, and game variation cards
  • Durable storage tin for easy organization

Please note: This is an add-on deck. The double dice is not included, but can be purchased separately here.
