Help children overcome their fear of stuttering and speak confidently with this speech fluency resource.
Developed and field-tested by Alice Anne Farley, Color Me Fluent® is a fluency program that brings together the Student, Parent/Caregiver, and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) as a team. Together they implement family education, learning theory, and behaviour modification to make changes in the student's life and speech.
Through the therapeutic activities provided in Color Me Fluent®, children who stutter can explore techniques such as breathing exercises, mindfulness, and cognitive strategies. By integrating these activities, children build confidence, reduce tension, and improve overall fluency.
Who is this speech therapy resource helpful for?
The methods, activities, and materials in this program make it a versatile kit for any caseload, grades Pre-K and up and ages 4 and up. Color Me Fluent® is designed to be adaptable to various age groups and therapy settings. Whether used in individual therapy sessions, group workshops, or as part of home practice, it provides a flexible and effective tool for supporting individuals who stutter on their journey to fluent speech.
What makes Color Me Fluent® an effective tool to help improve stuttering in children?
The Color Me Fluent® program promotes overlearning of correct and exaggerated speech patterns by focusing on breathing, phonation, articulation, and resonation. These strategies help the stutterer gain control of his/her speaking. The block management strategies in the program reduce fear and avoidance of speaking. This program also utilizes the power of colour to promote fluency and reduce the impact of stuttering. Levels of speech fluency represented in colours provide visual cues to the student regarding his/her speech.
- Red represents stuttering or disfluent speech.
- Orange represents easier speech production. Students use their targets and speak "under the umbrella" of orange speech.
- Green speech refers to fluent speech. It is the ultimate goal of the program
